JIMMY THE GREEK’S

215 Saco Ave., Old Orchard Beach, ME; (207) 934-7499; JimmyGreeks.com

Draft Beers: 50 Bottled/Canned Beers: About 60

Old Orchard Beach is a summer destination that attracts people from all over New England and a large number of Canadians and bikers. During the summer (and any time of year, really), Jimmy the Greek’s is the place for beer lovers to go for craft beer. It’s a fun little beer bar, and it has a solid draft list and bottle selection that stands out among the competition.

Jimmy’s draft list is heavy on Maine beers, such as Allagash, Baxter, D.L. Geary’s, Gritty McDuff’s, Sebago, and Shipyard. It also typically has beers from other areas’ breweries, such as the Abita Brewing Company in Louisiana and Dogfish Head from Delaware. Imports such as Erdinger from Germany and Delirium Tremens from Belgium are often available. The bottled list also has some more popular mainstays, such as Budweiser and Coors. However, if you’re looking for a little more craft in your bottled beer list, Jimmy’s has offerings such as Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale and Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, both from England, as well as beers from North Coast Brewing Company in California and Victory Brewing Company in Pennsylvania. The bottled list also includes several Belgian ales, such as Kasteel and Chimay. There is also a section for rare beers that includes Samichlaus from Austria and Porterhouse Oyster Stout (made with real oysters) from Ireland. There are also several different meads available, as well as some ciders.

With a name like Jimmy the Greek’s, you bet the menu is heavy on delicious Greek food. Appetizers include feta bread sticks, spanakopita, and saganaki. The menu also offers salads, including a strawberry salad that is made up of mixed greens, strawberries, toasted walnuts, goat cheese, and champagne vinaigrette. Main courses include several flat iron steaks, jambalaya, butternut squash ravioli, and fish and chips. Burgers are also available, including the Opa! Burger, which is an 8-ounce patty with tzatziki sauce and zesty spices. Think your stomach is up for a food challenge? Order the King Leonidas Calzone, which is triple the size of a regular calzone. Pick two meats and two veggies and if you can finish it, it’s free. If not, you’re out about 20 bucks.

It’s never a slow night at Jimmy’s. Of particular interest to beer lovers, a Brewer’s Night is held every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m., where patrons get a chance to meet a brewer, drink a lot of good beer, and win some prizes. There’s a second Jimmy the Greek’s location in South Portland at 115 Philbrook Rd., with a similar menu, similar beer list, and many different daily events, just like the original location.
